Gold purity, usually expressed in parts per thousand; thus 995 or two nines five is 995/1000 or 99.5% pure. The American Gold Eagle is .9167 fine, which means it is 91.67% gold. A Canadian Maple Leaf has a fineness of .999, which means it is 99.9% pure. Historically, 995 was the highest purity to which gold could be manufactured when good delivery was determined, but today for very high technology applications it is now possible to produce metal of up to 99.9999% purity.
